A survey, by Houghton and Sunderland South MP Bridget Phillipson, shows that a majority of local people have said the Budget will hit living standards and needed to better support jobs and growth locally.

The survey showed:

• 87 per cent of local people believe the government could and should do more to create jobs;
• 85 per cent said they may cut back on the amount of gas and electricity they use;
• 67 per cent said they are thinking of cutting back on essentials such as food;
• Only 13 per cent of local people said they can continue saving for their futures;
• 78 per cent said they are worried or very worried about losing their job;
• 71 per cent said they knew of a young person looking for work

Commenting on the survey, Bridget Phillipson MP said:

“In the same week that thousands of local people rejected David Cameron and Nick Clegg at the ballot box local people have reject the Coalition’slatest budget.

“It’s clear local people want to hear a plan, a blue print, a clear sense of direction as to how this Conservative-led government will create jobs and growth in our country. Unfortunately, the Chancellors last budget failed to do this.

“I have written to the Chancellor about my constituents concerns and will share his response with my constituents and the Sunderland Echo when I receive it.”
