Houghton and Sunderland South MP, Bridget Phillipson visited Barclays Sunderland Contact Centre in Doxford Park to celebrate the appointment of over 20 apprentices as part of the Barclay's Apprenticeship Scheme. The scheme aims to provide 1,000 jobs nationally for young people who do not have experience or qualifications. 100 of these jobs will be in Sunderland.
Successful applicants receive 12 months training and work towards a competency qualification in Financial Services, a BTEC Award in Customer Service, and qualifications in numeracy and literacy. Everyone who completes the programme is guaranteed a job.
Commenting after the visit, Bridget said:
“The latest unemployment figures show that locally young people are finding it increasingly difficult to find work.
"The Barclays Apprenticeship Scheme shows just what can be done to give young people a chance of being paid a full salary, training and qualifications, which will help them to develop long and rewarding careers.
"I would encourage as many local young people as possible, who are looking for work, to apply to this excellent scheme."
Barclay's Mel Donoghue said:
"These young people all have great talent and potential but have not been able to get a foot in the door until now and we're keen to see them start to build a career."
