Houghton and Sunderland South MP, Bridget Phillipson has welcomed action by Sunderland City Council to make the city “100% green” by 2050.

A total of 55 Labour councils across Britain signed up to the pledge made ahead of the landmark UN climate summit in Paris that began this week. This means that those councils will strive to ensure they use cleaner energy supplies, greener transport systems, and insulate homes. It is estimated this will cut the UK’s carbon footprint by more than 10%.

Bridget Phillipson MP, said:

“I welcome the action taken by Labour-led Sunderland City Council which, in addition to 54 other councils, will make a real difference in cutting the UK’s carbon footprint, which is one of the major causes of man made global warming.

“Climate change is as serious a threat to Britain’s security. We should do everything possible to meet this challenge and secure our planet’s environment for future generations.”
