World Water Day 2014Bridget Phillipson, Member of Parliament for Houghton and Sunderland South, has pledged her support for World Water Day, which was observed on Saturday 22nd March.

World Water Day is devotedto implementing UN recommendations and promoting activities regarding the world’s water resources.

This year’s theme, Water and Energy, was focusedon raising awareness of the inter-linkages between water and energy, and developing policies needed to ensurethat sustainable water and energy are secured for everyone around the world.

780 million people still lack access to clean drinking water in the world.

In order to raise awareness of World Water Day, Houghton and Sunderland South MP, Bridget Phillipson said:

“Thousands of children aged under five in developing countries die each day of diseases that can be prevented with adequate access to water and sanitation.

“World Water Day is a time to support those campaigning to give communities adequate access to water and sanitation in challenging environments.

“I will continue to put pressure on the government to maintain its support and commitment for clean water access.”
