Houghton and Sunderland South MP, Bridget Phillipson visited BarclaysSunderland Contact Centre in DoxfordPark to celebrate the appointment ofover 20 apprentices as part of theBarclay’sApprenticeship Scheme. The scheme aims to provide 1,000 jobs nationally for young people who do not have experience or qualifications. 100 of these jobs will be in Sunderland.

Successful applicants receive 12 months training and work towards a competency qualification in Financial Services, a BTECAward in Customer Service, and qualifications in numeracyand literacy. Everyone who completes the programme is guaranteed a job.

Commenting after the visit, Bridget said:

“The latest unemployment figures show that locally young people are finding it increasingly difficult to find work.

“The BarclaysApprenticeship Scheme shows just what can bedone to give young people a chance of being paid a full salary, training and qualifications, which will help them to develop long and rewarding careers.

“I would encourage as many local young people as possible, who are looking for work, to apply tothisexcellent scheme.”

Barclay’s Mel Donoghue said:

“These young people all have great talent and potential but have not been able to get a foot in the door until now and we’re keen to see them start to build a career.”
