This morning I visited Silksworth Sports Complex to observe swimming lessons in conjunction with International Learn to Swim Week, and Drowning Prevention Week. Both campaigns encourage schools, clubs, leisure centres and communities to promote learning to swim and water safety education through events, lessons, games and activities, in a bid to make more people aware of the dangers of water.

On average 400 people drown in the UK each year, and drowning is the third most common cause of accidental death in children. For many children, primary school is their only opportunity to learn vital swimming skills – but almost half of all children leave school unable to swim.

Every child should leave primary school able to swim and with a good knowledge of water safety. Everyone Active offers lessons for all ages and abilities at centres throughout the constituency and in Sunderland.
