This morning I met with Arthur Newsome, Chairman of the Showmens Guild Northern Section. Based in Hetton, it represents many local people who work in the travelling fun fair industry.
We discussed the challenges their members are facing following the necessary cancellation of events due to Covid-19. This has had a serious impact as many have seen their income dry up through no fault of their own with little prospect of that changing soon – yet the government’s one-size-fits-all approach means that support hasn’t always been there.
The Showmen’s Guild has a proud history, but faces its toughest period in many years. The government should listen so it can help them bounce back from this crisis, and I’ll be sure to raise their concerns with ministers, especially around the need for clear guidance.
