I recently had a wonderfully warm welcome at Handcrafted in Sunderland, where I saw first-hand just how transformative this charity’s personalised support can be for people who’ve faced homelessness, loneliness, or other major life challenges. It’s a place where confidence is rebuilt, skills are discovered, and new direction feels genuinely within reach.
During my visit, I spent time with the women’s craft group, who gather each week at the hub – a calm, social space, to practice creative skills together. I also stepped into the workshop and even tried my hand at the lathe. Under the guidance of one of Handcrafted’s talented volunteers, I created my own wooden keyring – a small but meaningful glimpse into the hands-on training opportunities the charity offers.
The energy and ambition among the trainees was truly inspiring – especially the two young people I met who recently launched their own barista venture, The Fat Pigeon. It’s clear that the support they’ve received from Handcrafted has helped spark their entrepreneurial spirit and given them the confidence to take real steps toward independence.
It was also a privilege to speak with Keith, Handcrafted’s Training Manager and a former deputy head teacher, who outlined the organisation’s exciting plans to expand their accredited training across Sunderland and the wider North East. He explained they have a clear vision – to create pathways that blend practical skill-building with the holistic support so many people in the community need.
What I saw happening at Handcrafted was much more than crafts and training – it was community building in action. Their approach brings together practical skills, social connection, and tailored guidance, offering people not just tools for work but tools for life. I’m delighted to know there are organisations like Handcrafted here in Sunderland, strengthening our community and changing lives every day.
