Swindon based energy supplier npower have renewed their commitment to the North East by moving 2000 customer service staff, previously based throughout the region, to a purpose built facility in Houghton-le-spring.

Local MP Bridget Phillipson and npower chief executive Volker Beckers opened the facility at Rainton Bridge Business Park. Npower’s long-term commitment to Wearside should increase job security for npower employees and provide more opportunities to local businesses. Npower joins a long list of companies such as Nissan and Rolls-Royce who recognise the skills base of the North East has the potential to grow their businesses.

Bridget said: “I am delighted to see npower making a long-term commitment to the North East.

“It’s testament to the hard work of the region’s people.

“This is a very difficult time. We have seen reports this week highlighting the impact that the recession and public sector cuts are having on the North East, which is why it’s so important we encourage private businesses to invest here.”
