On Wednesday 14th November, I attended The Wildlife Trusts’ Parliamentary reception, where I met Steve and Katy from the Durham Wildlife Trust.

The Durham Wildlife Trust has a clear mission to conserve wildlife in our local area, and the reception celebrated the Wildlife Trusts’ empowerment of young people throughout the UK. Young volunteers like Katy are helping to deliver positive change for their local environment and community, and I was encouraged by the passion young people are showing towards the environment.

The Prime Minister announced in July 2018 that the government would introduce an Environment Bill, promising to leave the environment in a better state over the next 25 years. The Wildlife Trusts’ Parliamentary reception highlighted the urgent need for an Environment Bill that ensures nature’s recovery, to ensure that everyone has access to wildlife-rich natural green space.

The event demonstrated how young people are a vital part of the Wildlife Trust’s movement, and it was great to speak about the work being done locally on sites such as Rainton Meadows to manage and maintain nature reserves.

Durham Wildlife Trust owns and manages 35 nature reserves in our region, working to protect and preserve local wildlife.
