On 12 March in the Commons I pressed ministers to address the crisis facing social care in our country.

I know that this issue is really important to local people, who are finding it increasingly difficult to access the services they need.

As if the current situation wasn’t bad enough, the King’s Fund estimates that the social care system will face a £2.5 billion shortfall by 2020, and the Local Government Association is clear that giving councils the power to increase the social care precept will not plug that gap.

It’s clear that urgent action is needed.

That’s why I urged the government to work with Labour to fix this problem.

Another Green Paper will only help if it comes up with a viable long-term solution to one of the biggest challenges this country has ever faced.
